Judging me and you: Task design modulates self-prioritization

چکیده

An extensive literature has revealed the benefits of self-relevance during stimulus processing. Compared to material associated with other persons (e.g., friend, mother), self-relevant information elicits faster and more accurate responses (i.e., self-prioritization effect). Probing boundary conditions this effect, recent research sought identify whether advantages can be attenuated (or even eliminated) under certain circumstances. Continuing in tradition, here we explored extent which basic aspects task design modulate self-prioritization. The results two experiments demonstrated just such an effect. During both simultaneous Expt. 1) sequential 2) versions a standard shape-label matching task, was reduced when presentation blocked self- or friend-relevant items) compared intermixed items). These findings highlight persistence its sensitivity task-related variation.

The proposition that similarity breeds attraction has received longstanding theoretical and empirical support. Still, the processes that guide this effect remain relatively unexamined. In this study, with a large sample of college students, we tested four variables proposed in prior literature to theoretically account for the similarity-liking link: consensual validation, certainty of being lik...

You, me and iLecture

This paper explores the implementation of iLecture for a second year accounting unit at Macquarie University. The research found that students interacted with iLecture in ways that were not entirely expected. Students appear to want more control over their learning environment and technologies. An example of this is iLecture as it has the potential to provide students with choices about how and...

You Won’t Harm Me If You Fool Me

A decision maker faces a new theory of how certain events unfold over time. The theory matters for choices she needs to make, but possibly the theory is a fabrication. We show that there is a test which is guaranteed to pass a true theory, and which is also conservative: A false theory will only pass when adopting it over the decision maker’s initial theory would not cause substantial harm; if ...

Comparing You = Comparing Me: Social Comparisons of the Expanded Self.

We examine whether individuals respond to comparisons involving romantic partners as they would to comparisons involving the self. Four studies (N = 2,210) using recalled (Studies 1-3) and actual (Study 4) comparisons about attractiveness (Study 1) and relationship skills (Studies 2-4) demonstrated that individuals high in self-other overlap decrease domain relevance following upward but not do...
